Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a bid for Michael Carrick, while United have also turned down a bid from Real Madrid for Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Ferguson is searching for a new midfielder, as he looks to find a long-term replacement for Roy Keane.
Tottenham admitted last month that United had tabled a bid for Carrick, but that they had rejected the bid out of hand.
Ferguson is a big admirer of the former West Ham United man and is thought to be weighing up a new move for the classy midfielder.
"We are trying to sign another central midfielder," said Ferguson.
"We have made a bid for Michael Carrick, but they (Tottenham) turned it down."
Ferguson also hinted that he could make a move for Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira.
The Old Trafford chief is monitoring the fall-out at Juventus following their relegation from Serie A and is ready to move for some of their top stars.
Ferguson is a big fan of Vieira and has tried to sign him in the past.
"We have to see what Juventus are planning for their players," added Ferguson.
"Vieira, (Fabio) Cannavaro and (Gianluca) Buffon are all top players and there are question marks about where they are going next season."
Ferguson also moved to quell speculation that van Nistelrooy was on the verge of a move to Real Madrid.
Van Nistelrooy handed in a transfer request last week and revealed he has his heart set on a switch to the Spanish capital.
Reports emanating from Spain suggested a deal could soon be completed, but Ferguson insists any move is still a way off after turning down Real's offer for the Dutchman.
"There is no agreement with Real Madrid and Manchester United over Ruud," said Ferguson.
"We have refused their offer. He remains a Manchester United player."
It seems likely that a move will go through, with Real keen to sign the former PSV Eindhoven ace and van Nistelrooy determined to move to El Santiago Bernabeu.
