Smith targets Cottagers clash
Manchester United striker Alan Smith is hoping to make his Red Devils return against Fulham in the club's Premiership opener.
The former Leeds United hit-man has not featured since breaking his leg in United's FA Cup defeat to Liverpool back in February.
Smith is now fit and raring to go and has played down suggestions that his lengthy spell on the sidelines has diminished his enthusiasm for the game.
Sir Alex Ferguson's charges kick off their Premiership campaign on August 20 and Smith is hoping to feature up front after the Scottish tactician revealed the 25-year-old was going to play a more attacking role this term following Ruud van Nistelrooy's exit to Real Madrid.
"When I return that hunger will be the same for me," Smith told MUTV. "I was lucky to get this far without a major injury because football is a physical game.
"You realise how much it does mean to you when you come in every day and are putting in the work after being injured. It would be easy to cut corners but you should never do that.
"I like taking part in sport anyway, so doing bike rides was fun.
"My aim has always been to be around for the start of the season and fingers crossed I will not be far off."
