Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe tried to clinch a move to Portsmouth, it has been revealed.
Pompey manager Harry Redknapp had a £6million bid for England striker Defoe, 23, turned down on the transfer deadline day of August 31.
Fratton Park chief executive Peter Storrie said Defoe told them he was keen to move to the south coast.
Storrie explained: "We put in a bid of £6m for Defoe and it was rejected. He wanted to come and that shows we are a club moving in the right direction."
Redknapp, who gave Defoe his Premiership debut during his time at West Ham, said: "I'd love to get him here."
