Tottenham are ready to launch a £12 million bid for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing.

The Sun says Spurs boss Martin Jol is desperate to sign a left-winger before the transfer window closes on August 31 and England ace Downing remains his top target.
Boro are desperate to keep a player whose value has rocketed after a promising international baptism but Jol wants Downing (below), 22, to balance a midfield that includes England winger Aaron Lennon on the right.
Jol watched Atletico Madrid's Martin Petrov but clearly has an appetite for top young English talent.
And he has £18.6m burning a hole in his pocket after the sale of Michael Carrick to
Manchester United.
He said: "Lennon is a typical wing player and it is always good to see players like Downing and Lennon.
"It's all about one-on-ones, getting to the bye-line and getting your crosses in - and Lennon does that. He's a very good ingredient for a national team."
