Newcastle United have launched a sensational bid to lure Real Madrid star David Beckham back home.

The Sun says Becks and wife Victoria held talks with Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd at a London hotel yesterday. But it is unlikely the former England skipper, 31, will be tempted as Real Madrid are desperate to cling on to one of their prize assets.

On Wednesday, new Real president Ramon Calderon and boss Fabio Capello were set to offer the midfielder a staggering ?25million-a-year salary until 2009.

The massive increase in his wage at the Bernabeu is tied in with an even bigger share of image rights.

But Shepherd is also prepared to offer a mega-money deal, including a big cut of merchandising rights.

It is understood he assured the Beckhams the club will be happy for him to be based at his Hertfordshire mansion.
