Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has told manager Glenn Roeder he must sell to fund a bid for Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The Mirror says the United striker remains top of Roeder's wishlist and the Toon boss is trying to offload Jean-Alain Boumsong to Marseille for £3million, plus fringe players Nicky Butt and Amdy Faye, to fund a bid.

Van Nistelrooy is seeking showdown talks with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson about his future at Old Trafford following their bust-up at the end of last season.
