Tottenham offer £9 million for Downing

Tottenham have tabled a new £9 million bid for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing.

The Mirror says Spurs made the offer last night, but Boro are understood to have instantly rejected it.
Spurs boss Martin Jol has been after Downing for the last year but previous bids starting at £6m have found no joy from the Teesside club.
Riverside chief Gareth Southgate is keen to hang onto the 22-year-old, who made his first England start in the 4-0 win over Greece earlier this month.
But the fact that Tottenham are getting closer to the £10m mark could mean they get their man before next Thursday's transfer deadline.
