Man Utd legend Charlton: Carrick worth the cash

Manchester United director Sir Bobby Charlton is confident new signing Michael Carrick will live up to his mega £18.5 million price-tag.

Many United fans are staggered £18.6million has been spent on landing the England midfielder, 25, especially as Ruud van Nistelrooy went to Real Madrid for just £10.3m.
But Old Trafford director Charlton predicts any worries about a player Spurs got for £2.75m will quickly disappear.
He said: "Michael Carrick is a great player. Once he has played his first game, I don't think anyone will consider the price we have paid. The deal's justified as we want the best.
"He is the type of player we have needed. He's English and he will be a big success at Manchester United.
"If we go in for someone we are not really expecting to get them on the cheap.
"It is part of being the club we are and it is something we have to live with.
"People say Michael cost a lot of money and I know Spurs spent a lot less on him - but he's a better player now than he was then."
