Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to step up his interest in Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Fergie is turning to Defoe after Inter Milan lodged a £26 million bid with Atletico Madrid yesterday for Fernando Torres.
The Mirror says the Reds will now focus their attention on prising Defoe away from Spurs, with Fergie confident of landing the England striker for around £11m.
Although Torres is out of their financial reach, because of United's urgent need to sign two midfielders, his summer transfer budget now stands at nearly £50m after the club slashed £28m from their annual interest bill.
