Rooney the best skipper
Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed his stand-in captain Wayne Rooney after he played a key role in Manchester United's 3-0 win over FC Copenhagen.
The 20-year-old was handed the armband with Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand all missing.
"I thought he was fantastic. It's always difficult choosing captains," Ferguson told ITV.
"I was looking for outfield player and maybe I overlooked Edwin van der Sar. [Rooney] responded to it, absolutely brilliant."
Rooney said he had no idea he was going to be made captain for the night.
"Obviously there were a few injuries, I think Giggsy was ill. When I went out I got the armband so obviously I was pleased with that," he said.
"But that's not the main issue of the night - the main issue was to get three points, which we did."
The England star also said he was coming into form after a stuttering start to the season.
"It's getting better. I was pleased with [the performance against] Wigan and pleased with tonight. I'm getting more or less back to my best."
