Ferguson supports McClaren

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken out about recent criticism of Steve McClaren, urging England fans to give him time to show what he can do.

"The important thing is to let him get on with it. I think he's got the ability," he said on his former United assistant. "I think once again you get an over-reaction. It becomes pretty abusive."
The England boss has been criticised recently, not least for his tactics in the 2-0 loss to Croatia, but the Man Utd manager has backed his former no. 2 to come good, adding that people may have underestimated Croatia.
"He's young and he's got the experience of Terry Venables with him. To think you're going to go to Croatia and win there easily, I don't know what world you're in."
Ferguson has also predicted Wayne Rooney to find his form sooner rather than later, stressing that the striker needs games. The United and England forward has experienced his first significant dip in form, and has inevitably attracted much attention from the media.
"I don't think he played badly on Wednesday. I've spoken to the lads and that and I think he did well.
"He's gradually getting his game back and it'll come back. There are no fears about that.
"You can train as much as you like, but in terms of getting timing and the tempo of your game right there's only one thing that helps that and it is playing games.
"I'm confident he'll get that very, very soon. What we need is a bit of patience and wait.
"Every defender in the country knows the boy will come to life. He just needs games."
