McClaren blast England stars
England boss Steve McClaren has warned his underachievers their international futures are on the line.
Big names like Ashley Cole, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard could be axed as McClaren shakes the team up after the 2-0 defeat in Croatia, which followed the disappointing home draw against Macedonia.
Peter Crouch, too, is vulnerable because he has still not convinced the management he is international class despite an impressive goal tally.
McClaren has a friendly in Holland next month and another in February, possibly against Spain, before qualifiers in Israel and Andorra in March.
As he dissected the wreckage of Zagreb, McClaren said: "We will use the two friendlies effectively and maybe our approach will be different in some respects. The personnel will maybe have to be different. That will be very closely looked at.
"You have to get the right people on the bus going in the same direction, staff and players. We have to look at the young talent coming through and there's a lot of it.
"There are players in the Under-21s knocking on the door and we will be looking at them very, very closely."
Ironically, one of the stars of the midweek Under-21 victory in Germany was 17-year-old Theo Walcott who dazzled as a two-goal substitute.
McClaren added: "We'll have to wait and see about that. He did do well for the Under-21s the other night as did a lot of players."
