Sir Bobby step in for Owen

Sir Bobby Charlton could be the key to Manchester United's bid for Owen Hargreaves being successful this week.

The United director's long working relationship and friendship with Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer, that stretches back to the World Cup final in 1966, may prove to be their last throw of the dice.

Bayern have consistently refused to welcome any offers from Old Trafford for Hargreaves and United haven't made a formal bid - and an £18m offer could also help United director Charlton in his diplomatic efforts.

Hargreaves himself has made several public pleas to try to persuade his employers to cave in to the point where his relationship with general manager Uli Hoeness is at breaking point.

Sir Alex Ferguson admits the impasse still remains, saying: "It is stalemate. David Gill spoke to their finance guy in Monaco when he was at the Champions League draw last Thursday but nothing came of it."
