Chelsea have offered William Gallas in a straight swap for Arsenal fullback Ashley Cole.
The Sun says the Blues' proposal was immediately laughed out of court by the Gunners.
Arsenal value wantaway Cole, who has two years left on his contract, at £25million.
And although they are interested in Gallas - who has a year to run on his deal - they have bid a mere ?5m, leaving a discrepancy of £20m.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho vowed to make defender Gallas, 29, rot in the reserves for the season rather than let him go to Arsenal.
